The author

Susan Honjo

I am Susan Honjo, author of Lifequake, a true story of love, loss, and resilience.

Lifequake was my journey of healing and renewal. Writing became a way to piece myself back together and to raise my voice for all women who have faced violence, injustice, and discrimination.

This book speaks to those who, in the name of love, lose themselves, accepting the unacceptable out of fear, shame, or the fragile hope that love alone can heal what hurts. Many women remain silent, trapped in relationships where love turns to control, because leaving is never as simple as it seems. What many fail to see is that leaving is not a moment, it is a slow and aching decision, shadowed by fear, confusion, and the tangled emotions that love can still hold.

My story is not mine alone. It echoes the struggles of countless women who have endured not only violence, but also prejudice and the harsh injustices of society, because of their origins, their differences, or simply their courage.

I hope that my testimony inspires you to overcome the lifequakes that shake your own world, to find courage, determination, and faith in who you are and in the choices you make.

The protagonist’s name, Saskia, means “valley of light,”, a reflection of my hope to shed light on the silent battles faced by many immigrant women in Switzerland and to awaken empathy and understanding in every reader.

Lifequakes break us open, yet through the cracks, light finds its way in.

Today, I am a new woman, stronger and freer. Writing my story has been my liberation. Life has taught me resilience. We are the true architects of our own happiness.

Like a smile, joy can ripple from one heart to another. I hope my story reminds you that no matter how broken you may feel, you can rebuild and emerge reborn, from your own story.

What people are saying about the book

{A Stunning Memoir of Courage and Transformation Susan Honjo's "Lifequake" is a beautifully written and deeply moving account of love, loss, and the resilience required to rebuild one's life. From the opening pages, Honjo's literary prowess is evident, her descriptions of Geneva and Mount Salève are so vivid you can feel the sunlight dancing on Lake Geneva and sense the weight of the "tsunami" looming overhead. What makes this memoir extraordinary is Honjo's ability to capture the complexity of difficult relationships with both honesty and grace. Through the protagonist Saskia's journey, we experience the profound isolation of finding oneself in a foreign country, having surrendered so much for love, only to face the painful realization that staying may mean losing oneself entirely. The narrative structure is masterful. Honjo takes us through the anxiety and vulnerability of a police station interview, but rather than rushing through the story, she allows us to sit with the discomfort, the uncertainty, and the courage it takes to speak one's truth. Her prose is lyrical yet accessible, philosophical yet grounded in raw human experience. This is not just a story about leaving a relationship, it's about reclaiming identity, finding strength in moments of profound vulnerability, and understanding that sometimes the hardest decisions are the ones that save us. Honjo's writing invites empathy and reflection, making "Lifequake" essential reading for anyone who has ever felt lost, alone, or wondered where they truly belong. A remarkable debut that deserves to be widely read and discussed.

{A deeply moving story, told with restraint, courage, and honesty. The narrative grips you viscerally and pushes you to your limits, confronting you with a stark reality: even the most beautiful love story can end in tragedy, and even the most sincere soul can fall victim to the cold and inhumane injustice of public administrations.

{To love, to lose, to find oneself again A deeply touching story that moved me. Saskia believed in a fairy tale, but her journey turns into pain and then rebuilding. I was struck by her strength, honesty, and the hope she finds again. This book is both a cry and a heartfelt love letter to the man she truly loved. A powerful testimony. Truly worth reading.

{I read this book in one sitting. The story is powerful and sheds light on a reality that is often overlooked, one that can happen to anyone. This testimony is deeply moving and represents a true act of courage. The author dares to share her story without shame, and that is a powerful message: there is no shame to carry. This book is essential for raising awareness about injustice, relational dysfunction, and for reminding us that resilience is possible.

{Lifequake is more than a book; it is an experience that dismantles you and lovingly puts you back together. It begins with the most exquisite, hopeful love story, one that makes you believe in soulmates. And then, with the force of a tsunami, it shatters your heart, leaving you to ask the most difficult question: Is love enough? Is it a fortress when the entire world seems to conspire against you, when you are left alone to fight mountains? This book is a profound exploration of the human spirit. It delves into our deepest fragilities and our resilience, showing how hope can be destroyed and then, maybe, rebuilt from the ashes. I was deeply moved by the raw, authentic journey of the two main characters. It will make you smile, cry with frustration, get angry at the injustice, and ultimately, question everything you thought you knew about love and strength. A truly transformative read.

{A story of love, told from its very beginning and surviving through its pauses,  yet one that continues to live in the heart and the soul. An intense love, marked at times by tolerance and passivity, but whose depth revealed itself amid moments of turmoil and tragedy. It is also the story of women who dare to love across cultures, often forced to overcome political and social prejudice. A captivating book that will undoubtedly spark a Lifequake in your thoughts and preconceptions.

{I loved Lifequake. It's an incredible story that keeps you on the edge of your seat until the very last line, with a main protagonist of remarkable resilience. This book also exposes the intolerable flaws and injustices of the Swiss administrative system, and I hope it will help bring about change.
